PO'S Ice House
About us
A Texas ice house is a casual, often outdoor bar or gathering spot, typically serving cold drinks like beer and cocktails. These establishments originated in Texas in the early 20th century, where they originally stored and sold ice, but over time evolved into social spaces. Ice houses often have a laid-back, rustic vibe, picnic tables, and a friendly atmosphere. They’re popular spots for locals to relax, especially in warm weather.
P.O.'s Ice House, located in Cypress at 12710 Telge Road, is a popular site for gatherings of family and friends. What began its life as a grocery store in the 1940's (yes they sold ice,) was probably best known in the 1980's as P.O.'s Burgers. In 2015, P.O.'s (and neighboring Cypress Saloon) was sold, the P.O.'s name was retired and the entire property was rebranded as The Shack. In August 2018, local restaurateurs Brian Sandel and Mark McShaffry partnered to buy the property and Creekwood Grill was born, but the original P.O.'s would remain dormant for a few more years. As Creekwood Grill's family focused business grew, so did a need for a Playground for Grown-ups.
In 2023, Sandel and McShaffry took to renovating the P.O.'s space into a warm, comfortable and nostalgic 21 and over bar, and with the blessing of the original owners, P.O.'s was brought back to life as an easy-going, open air (when the temperature cooperates) social space for friends and neighbors to watch a game or simply gather and enjoy conversation and a cold beverage.
BUILDING ON LEGACY:P.O.'s Ice House and Creekwood Grill embrace the past to shape the future
P.O.'s Ice House recently reopened in a historic Cypress building, thanks to the combined efforts of longtime Houston restaurant owners. Serving up top-quality bourbons, delectable bar food, cocktails and featuring an extensive beer selection, the restaurant introduces a new vibe to the clientele of its sister restaurant Creekwood Grill.
